DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics.
The Ultrafast Optics and X-rays Group develops novel sources such as high-gradient accelerators, free-electron lasers andhigh-energy, few-cycle electromagnetic sources spanning from THz to high-harmonic frequencies. These sources require custom high energy (greater than 1J) picosecond to femtosecond laser systems operating at greater than 1 kHz pulse Repetition rate which we also develop in house. Our current program includes development of cryogenic and non-cryogenic systems based on a variety of materials. To expand these activities we are looking for a senior researcher to lead all aspects of research, development, design and construction of such laser systems while keeping an eye open for new technological possibilities.
Direct research, development, design and construction of high-energy and high-power lasers
Expand understanding of laser materials and their use in laser amplifiers
Expand on laser architectures for high-energy and high-power lasers
lnvestigate new manufacturing technologies for amplifier gain elements
PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering with experience in the areas of diode-pumped solid-state laser systems, ultrafast lasers, fiber lasers, optics or similar experience
More than 5 years of industrial and/or academic experience in ultrafast laser science
Excellent scientific knowledge base with analytical and experimental skills
Ability to lead an active research and development group in the area of novel high-energy and high-power lasers
The position is limited to 2 years, but has the potential to become permanent. Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany.
